SIG Sauer is the brand name used by several sister companies involved in the design and manufacture of firearms. The original company was Schweizerische Waggon Fabrik (SWF),SIG Sauer later Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) but it then went through several selloffs and the SIG Sauer brand is now spread over several companies. The original SIG is now known as SIG Combibloc Group and no longer has any firearms business.

  • The German company is SIG Sauer GmbH & Co. KG. It was formed in 1976 as a partnership between Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) of Switzerland and J.P. Sauer & Sohn of Germany.
  • The Swiss company is Sig Sauer AG. Its predecessor SIG Arms AG was sold to L&O Holding in western Germany and was first renamed SAN Swiss Arms AG — commonly known as Swiss Arms — and in late 2019 was further renamed SIG Sauer AG.
  • The American company is SIG Sauer, Inc. Its predecessor SIGARMS was founded in Virginia in 1985 to import and distribute SIG Sauer firearms into the United States: Its headquarters were moved to New Hampshire in 1990. This company was renamed SIG Sauer, Inc. in 2007, and since 2000 is organizationally separate from SIG Sauer GmbH.

The parent company is L&O Holding. It is the parent company  the German SIG Sauer GmbH & Co. KG, the Swiss SIG Sauer AG, and the American SIG Sauer,

SIG Sauer P226

The SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized, service-type pistol made by SIG Sauer. This model is sold with a choice of four chambers to choose from: the 9×19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, or .22 Long Rifle. It has essentially the same basic design as the SIG Sauer P220, but is developed to use higher capacity, double stack magazines in place of the single stack magazines of the P220.

The P226 itself has spawned further sub-variants; the P228 and P229 are both compact versions of the double stack P226 design, while the P224 is a subcompact variant. The SIG Sauer P226 and its variants are in service with numerous law enforcement and military organizations worldwide.

In January 1985 SIGARMS was established in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia where the handgun models P220 and P230 were imported into the US from SIG Sauer in Germany. Two years later the firm moved to a larger facility in Herndon, Virginia and introduced models P225, P226, and P228.15SIGARMS moved to Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1990 where production facilities had been established and production began on the P229 in 1992.15The parent company, SIG Sauer GmbH, is a subsidiary of manufacturing firm L&O Holding, which also owns Swiss Arms AG which was formerly a division of Sig Holding AG. Since 2000 SIG Sauer Inc. has been organizationally separate from manufacturer SIG Sauer GmbH.4 SIGARMS, and its European sister companies, J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Blaser US, Mauser Jagdwaffen GmbH, and Swiss Arms were bought by Michael Lüke and Thomas Ortmeier in October 2000.16 In 2007 SIGARMS changed its name to SIG Sauer Inc..17Ron Cohen, SIG Sauer’s president and chief executive officer joined the privately held firm in 2004. Born in 1963 and of Israeli ancestry, Cohen studied at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology and served in the Israeli Defense Forces. Cohen was a commander of a combat unit between 1979 and 1984.18 In 2004, according to Cohen the company was near failure, with just 130 employees. Cohen decided to add AR-15-pattern rifles to the company’s product mix, which he credits with saving the company. By 2016, it had over 1,000 employees and was selling more than 43,000 firearms a year.19 SIG Sauer is the largest of the five sister companies and one of the largest firearms manufacturing entities in the world.2According to SIG Sauer, one-third of US police use SIG firearms.Read More…
